Funerals: Burials and Cremations

My role begins as soon as you or your appointed funeral director contacts me. I will get in touch immediately to arrange a meeting with you in your home or at another mutually agreed place.

We will discuss what sort of ceremony you would like for your loved one, and I will strive to gain a strong understanding of the type of person they were, and the part they played in your life, through the stories you will tell me of their life and the part they played in your lives.

You may already have fixed ideas about the music you would like to be played at the ceremony, or the poems, readings or hymns you would like to be included, but, if not, I would be happy to offer suggestions.

After that initial meeting, I will work on composing the full service and eulogy. During this time, I will be available to talk to you on the phone if you feel there is more information you would like included in the service.

Once I have drafted the eulogy, I will send it to you at least three days before the service so that any errors you spot can be corrected in good time.

The day itself will be emotionally challenging, but I will be there not only to perform the ceremony, but also to support you and your family.

Scattering / Interment of Ashes

There is no set convention about what to do with the Ashes after a loved one’s cremation. They can be left with the funeral director for an unlimited period while do decide what to do with them. Some people take the ashes home and keep them there for the rest or their lives. Others will inter them in a burial ground which has been chosen by their loved one before their death, or perhaps chosen by the family. Another choice is to scatter them on land or seas to which the family had a special connection.

I would consider it a privilege to help you to create a unique and memorable service to go along with whatever your choice is.

Memorial Services

The cost of cremations and burials can be daunting, especially in this day and age of seemingly endless rises in the cost of everything. Direct funerals, where the body of your loved one is cremated without ceremony, has the advantage of substantially cutting those costs. Families can then organise a memorial service in their own homes, favourite outdoor space, local pub or wherever they like. I would be honoured to conduct such a service for you. Time is limited in churches and crematoriums, but this service can run and run. I will approach it with the same diligence I give to traditional burials and cremation ceremonies, learning from you the stories of your loved one’s life, the joys, the loves, the successes and disappointments, to create the perfect, unique celebration.

However, it is important to remember that this non-traditional ceremony is not for everyone, as it may not fit in with their cultural or religious beliefs. So if you are thinking about having a direct cremation followed by a memorial service, I would encourage you to discuss the pros and cons with me or your funeral director.
